Move Update - July 23 (Scott)

We are now permanent residents in the new building – welcome!

As of Friday, everything should have been moved and everything placed in the appropriate location. If any issues are found, please let me know. There are many card board boxes to recycle as you unpack. We have a very nice way of recycling in the new building. At the far end of the building on the campus side, there is a shelter where a dumpster would normally go. Inside there and on the right is a blue machine. It is a compressor for recycled materials. If you lift the top lever you can open the door. You can place any recyclable material inside: plastic bottles, cans, paper, card board etc. It is helpful but not required to separate various materials by using plastic bags sitting next to the machine. Either way, put what you want recycled inside the door, close it, and lower the lever. The machine will compress it from there on its own. It will be emptied daily. We are the second guinea pigs in this new approach within the CRC. I encourage you all to utilize it and make it a success. Note that there is a trash compressor in this shelter as well. Feel free to use it, but the housekeeping staff will be emptying the trash bins daily, so you should not need to use it yourself.

As residents of the CRC, we have access to a number of excellent amenities including walking trials, a restaurant, and a fitness center. I suggest you look at the CRC webpage (http://www.vtcrc.com/) to find out what all is available.

We’ve learned that when you use the street address for fedex etc., it is important to note for them that we are in Suite 1000. So the full street address should be: Space@VT, 1901 Innovation Dr., Suite 1000, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Card swipes should be working at the main entrance, but we have had cases of it not functioning for specific people. Let myself and Debbie Collins know if you have any issue. Other work is continuing including more card swipes for some rooms, hanging white boards in the offices, mounting monitors, etc. These should continue without causing intrusion and we’ll try and get them done ASAP. Again, please let us know of any issues.

Construction will continue on the second floor and the first floor suite near the main entrance until well into the fall, when our neighbors move in. We’ve had nothing but good luck with construction crew so I doubt there will be any issue with this. If any problems come up, please let me know. For now, there should be no reason for most of us to go upstairs. A few of us working on antennae for the roof will need to go up there for that purpose. If you are not working on one of the antennae, please do not attempt to go to the roof. The safety issues regarding that are considerable and so is the penalty for not following them. If you do have a valid reason for going there, please talk with me first.

Two refrigerators and microwaves will be delivered early in the week for our kitchen. In addition, I put a Keurig coffee/tea machine there that I will have running shortly. Hopefully other contributions will come along (anyone have a grill for the porch area? J) These are there for everyone to use. There is plenty of cabinet space for us to share. I suggest labeling what is yours. All we ask is that this area be kept neat and everyone clean up after themselves. This is a rule that applies throughout the building. It’s a beautiful place and we all need to work to keep it that way.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone that one of the largest drivers in the design of this new building was that it be a an environment that fosters collaboration. I may not be objective, but I believe we met that extremely well. The best thing you could do then is to put that environment to work. Please use the 3 wall size white boards, the excellent furniture, the conference rooms, design labs, etc. They are there for everyone. When you’re eating lunch by the window near the kitchen, strike up a conversation with someone you don’t see that often. Let’s start talking about ideas, designs, proposals, papers, and presentations. Let’s also start talking about seminars, journal clubs etc. Let’s be productive, collaborative, and have fun!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the move! And let’s give a special thanks to those who made this happen – Scott, Kathy, and the AOE administration!
